The Gold in These Hills

Two second chance loves stories and the legacy that binds them together

Coming August 2021

“Inspirational readers who enjoy time-slip historicals will love this.”

– Publishers Weekly

Upon arriving at Kenworthy, California, mail-order-bride, Juniper Cohen, was met by the pounding of the gold mine, the rowdiness of its prospectors, and her greatest surprise of all: the love of the kind man who awaited her. But when the mine proves empty of profit, questions surface as to who illicitly embedded gold inside the shaft to begin with, and when Juniper’s husband vanishes, doubt and discouragement are as prevalent as the pioneers fleeing this dying boom-town. As winter blows in, Juniper pens a series of letters to her husband, but fears she is waiting on a ghost—or worse, an outlaw.

A century later, Johnny Sutherland, throws himself into restoring a 100-year-old abandoned farmhouse in California’s San Jacinto Mountains. While exploring its secrets he uncovers the letters Juniper wrote to her Dearest John and is moved by the handwritten accounts that bear his name. He draws courage from the acquitted prisoner and courageous bride whose love survived heartbreak, scandal, and sacrifice in the wild territory that is now his home.

Aided by the detail in Juniper’s letters, and with a little help, Johnny reunites the legacy that stems from the heroic writings of a love-story that touched history. One between a gold miner and his bride, and the faith that held them together.

The Prize

Inspired by the Manchester Mercantile featured within THE GOLD in THESE HILLS, this little wooden crate holds some southwest staples and imports:

A bottle of peach-mint tea for afternoon porch sipping, lemon soap and a wooden scrub brush after a long day working the land, a jar of basil pesto and a bag of lemon drops fur supper time, a “Bless this home” plaque for the fireplace mantle, a small woven basket with succulents to rest on the front porch (they’re not real for shipping-ease 🙂 ), and an autumn sunflower to remember all that God can do.
